Thank you for your site. I enjoyed your info and the comments from all the kindred spirits. My collection is small. I just bought three irons that look like they were chiseled out of one piece of iron then an iron handle was screwed on top. I have no idea what type of irons they are. Can anyone help identify them?

My wife and I have a collection of approx. 500 non-electric irons and iron rests. We display some of our irons at local historic plantations (during children's heritage fair days) and at local librarys. In addition I use old photos and illustrations depicting individuals using various types of irons so the children (or adults) can easily understand how they were used. I have been unable to find an illustration showing how a goffering iron was used. Specifically, the type that has a round tubular barrel on a stand that is heated with a poker and ruffles are then wraped around the barrel creating a series of ruffles for a 15th thru 18th century collar etc. I have illustrations of people wearing the collars, bonnets, etc. but nothing showing someone actually using the iron. I would appreciate any help that you could offer.

I have recently been researching these antique irons... as I have a couple friends in the scrapping business who have stumbled across 2 different irons in the past couple months. The first iron is an antique revolving slug iron that I finally identified on a website listed under Unusual patented irons. It has 3 ironing sides and a door that opens on the 4th side to insert the heated slug. It is fully functioning and has no broken parts....which I have been told is rare for these irons.
The 2nd iron I believe is a "sad" iron. it has only the # 7 on it... no other info. I never thought finding out information on antique irons would be so interesting. If you know anything about these irons or know of someone wanting to buy them please let me know!!!

Hi, it was interesting to see your collection. I think it is a good idea to keep such things because they were a part of someone's life, belonged to someone's household. Do you have any experience to keep your irons without rust? I cleaned my irons with sand in special device. Shall I grease them with oil thin layer to protect from future rust? Thank you for your response. My best regards ti you. Natalia (September 8, 2011)

6/11/11 saw a charcoal iron. The lady who had it has no idea of when they were used. Can you help by giving the range of years in which they may have been used? Thanks

I have bought my first Carron #3 sad iron and was wondering on the history of it.I am having a hard time finding anything about it. also my friend has a sad iron and was wondering how I go about finding the history on it...it has some letter that are legible but some are not...can anyone guide me in the right direction to find the history of these two sad irons. they are both cast iron flat, I believe pressing irons.
Thanx
