Thank you for the wonderful information. We have 35 irons and 7 trivets in our present collection. The local historical society has just requested to borrow our irons for a short term display. Although we have thoroughly enjoyed collecting our irons since 1993, we have never taken the time to research their history and specific uses. Your link was an enormous help. Now we will be able to make some informative labels to include in the display. Many thanks.

I know nothing about flat irons. My friend bought 8 of them at a yard sale, and I found this site while trying to get an idea of what they are worth. I find it very interesting. The story on these is that they were brought from Europe in the late 19th. early 20th. century by some Italian immigrants. They vary in size, are in good condition, and have a rooster on them. I'd appreciate any information I can get. Thanks!

Hi, I'm doing a research project on a antique coal iron very similar to the one you show on your web site with the rooster. I'm currently trying to find out more about the simbology of the iron, especially the rooster. All the symbology books I've read show the rooster as a symbol for masculine power. I was most intrigued by this because these antique irons where made in a time where only women would use them. Any idea on why the use of a rooster in the iron? According to my Professor the ones with the rooster are the most ancient(in Portugal), but we don't have any usefull studies on them. any information about the possible reason for the rooster or any information on charcoal irons that you could give me would be a big help, since there is no biography I can look up nor museums nearby to give me any information. Thank you for your time.
Great idea of a web site, by the way.
